LATEST UPDATE : details form Surrey County Council (05.08.06)
I am afraid that the Camberley night bus is no longer in operation. The night bus concept first started in Staines for the Christmas period over 2003/4 operating as a free service in partnership with the Police and Crime & Disorder Partnership. The initial passenger figures were impressive.
Following on from this a proper structured service, charging a flat fare, was introduced and subsequent services became operational in Epsom and Camberley. As funding from the Crime & Disorder Partnerships ceased, the bus operator Centra continued to operate the services on a commercial basis, which resulted in considerable losses being made.
Unfortunately the take up of the service meant there was no prospect of it becoming a wholly self-financing commercial venture. As a result all night buses were withdrawn in September 2005. At the time the withdrawal details were featured on the Surrey County Council website. I believe this news item has since been removed.
We believe there are several factors that resulted in the failure of the night bus services the main one being competition from local taxi firms. Clearly the bus services could only drop passengers at their local bus stop compared with a taxi dropping people right outside the front door. There are no plans to reintroduce the night bus services at this stage.
